MANILA, Philippines - The Mayon Trail Run, the country’s leading trail marathon, holds its fifth edition on Aug. 18, 2012 with more than 300 extreme Filipino runners clashing with Kenyan ultra-marathoners in Legazpi City, Albay.

Organized by the city government of Legazpi with the support of the Department of Tourism, the event will fire off at Ligñon Hill and will pass through the Kapit Tuko trail, Wisdom trail, Yawa River, Bonga Gulley, Lava Wall, 4 x 4 trail and the ATV Mayon Trail Summit.

The race, which also ends at Ligñon Hill, will be mostly comprised by trails where lava flows during eruptions of Mayon Volcano.

According to Legazpi City Mayor Geraldine Rosal, the Mayon Trail Run is a challenging event which will take runners to the city’s scenic spots and a breath-taking view of world-renowned Mayon Volcano.

She added the event will boost Legazpi City’s position as a sports and adventure tourism haven because of its scenic beauty.

The Mayon Trail Run also serves as part of the month-long 21st Ibalong Festival which relives an ancient Bicol legend about the prehistoric civilization of the region.

The festival will also feature other sporting events such as the Mayor Geraldine Rosal Golf Tournament, dragon boat competition, the national beach volleyball for college students, a three-day Mayon Volcano climb, a tennis tournament, a karate championship, a local airsoft competition, a bowling Cup and a bicycle caravan.

The province of Albay offers a wide range of terrain perfect for extreme mountain biking. Whether you are looking for rough, steep and rocky terrain or tracks winding through rain forests, streams and fields – the intrepid mountain biker can find it in Albay. For instance, there’s nothing like mountain biking on the slopes of the most active volcano in the country – the ultimate adrenaline rush.

Looking for boulders, rocks, dirt, sand, streams, thick canopies, and lots of big drops through gulleys of hardened lava? This is it!

As world famous mountain bikers Brian Lopes and Hans Rey have discovered, Legazpi City has world class mountain biking trails with a breathtaking view to match! Being able to ascend from sea level up to almost 3000 feet in a mountain bike and ride hard and fast back down through the most challenging terrain with an active volcano staring down from above – this is a life changing experience.
