PRICE SITUATION: YEAR-ON-YEAR
The Bicol Region’s inflation rate in December 2019 accelerated to 3.3 percent.
Compared to the 7.0 percent inflation rate in the same period last year, the December 2019
rate was lower by 3.7 percentage points.
The increase this month compared to the 1.5 percent inflation rate last month was
attributed to the Inflation Rates of the following Commodity/Service groups: Food and Non-
Alcoholic Beverages (0.8 percent from -1.9 percent), Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and
Other Fuels (4.5 percent from 3.4 percent), Transport (5.2 percent from 1.1 percent), and
Communication (0.7 percent from 0.5 percent).
Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (39.0 percent from 39.7 percent), Clothing and
Footwear (4.4 percent from 5.1 percent), Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine
Maintenance of the House (3.1 percent from 3.2 percent), Health (2.2 percent from
2.3 percent), Recreation and Culture (2.2 percent from 2.5 percent) and Restaurants and
Miscellaneous Goods and Services (3.9 percent from 4.0 percent) were the commodity
groups to go down.
Education remained the same at 8.5 percent.
Inflation Rate in Albay is the highest in the region at 5.6 percent. Camarines Norte
and Sorsogon posted higher inflation rate than that of the region at 4.3 percent
and 3.4 percent, respectively. The rest of the provinces posted lower than that of the region.
Camarines Sur at 2.0 percent, Catanduanes at 2.9 percent and Masbate at 1.9 percent.

Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (1.1 percent from 0.3 percent) and Transport (1.8 percent
from 0.3 percent).
On the other hand, inflation rates went down on the following Commodity/Service
Groups: Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (0.7 percent from 2.9 percent), Clothing and
Footwear (0.0 percent from 0.4 percent), Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine
Maintenance of the House (0.1 percent from 0.2 percent), and Restaurants and
Miscellaneous Goods and Services (0.2 percent from 0.3 percent).
Health (0.2 percent), Communication (0.2 percent), Recreation and Culture
(0.1 percent) and Education (0.0 percent) remained the same.
With all the observed price changes in CPI, the Purchasing Power of Peso in Bicol
declined to 0.81. Albay stood at 0.80, Camarines Norte at 0.78, Camarines Sur at 0.80,
Catanduanes at 0.82, Masbate at 0.81, and Sorsogon at 0.86.
