Consumer Price Index for all Income Households in Bicol Region: March 2019

PRICE SITUATION: YEAR-ON-YEAR
The Bicol Region’s inflation rate in March 2019 slowed down to 3.9 percent.
Compared to the 5.2 percent inflation rate in the same period last year, the March 2019 rate
was higher by 1.3 percentage points.
The movement was attributed to the Inflation Rates of the following
Commodity/Service groups: Clothing and Footwear (from 5.5 percent to 5.7 percent),
Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (5.1 percent to 6.5 percent), Transport
(from 1.1 percent to 3.2 percent), Communication (from 0.3 percent to 0.5 percent) and
Recreation and Culture (from 2.9 percent to 3.0 percent).
The heavily weighted Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages went down (from 5.8
percent to 3.0 percent) along with Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (from 22.4 percent to
19.3 percent), Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Maintenance of the House
(from 6.0 percent to 5.8 percent), Health (from 6.3 percent to 6.0 percent), and Restaurants
and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (from 6.4 percent to 5.9 percent).
Education remained the same at -22.0 percent.
Inflation Rate in Camarines Sur is still highest in the region at 5.3 percent. Camarines
Norte posted higher inflation rate that that of the region at 4.2 percent and Sorsogon at 4.1
percent. The rest of the provinces posted lower than that of the Region. Albay at 2.2 percent,
Catanduanes at 1.9 percent, and Masbate at 3.2 percent.
PRICE SITUATION: MONTH-ON-MONTH
On a Month-on-month bases, the general prices of consumer items went down by
-0.2 percent.
The decrease was observed on Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (from
0.1 percent to -1.4 percent), Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (from 4.1 percent to 0.6
percent), and Restaurants and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (from 0.7 percent to 0.3
percent).On the other hand, prices went up on the following Commodity/Service Groups:
Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (from 0.2 percent to 1.7 percent), Health
(from -0.5 percent to 0.5 percent), Transport (from 0.7 percent to 1.5 percent),
Communication (from 0.1 percent to 0.2 percent), and Recreation and Culture (from 0.1
percent to 0.3 percent).
Clothing and Footwear, Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine
Maintenance of the House, and Education remained at 0.5 percent, 0.2 percent, and 0.0
percent, respectively.
With all the observed price changes in CPI, the Purchasing Power of Peso in Bicol
remained at 0.83. Albay stood at 0.84, Camarines Norte at 0.81, Camarines Sur at 0.82,
Catanduanes at 0.85, Masbate at 0.82, and Sorsogon at 0.88.
