Did you know that: poverty incidence in Bicol Region declined to 27.5 percent in 2015?

Poverty incidence in Bicol region improved both in terms of families and individuals in 2015. Poverty incidence among families dropped by 4.8 percentage points from 32.3 percent in 2012 to 27.5 percent in 2015. Likewise, poverty incidence among individuals was estimated at 36.0 percent in 2015, down by 5.1 percentage points from the 41.1 percent in 2012. This was based on the latest official poverty statistics released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). The estimates of poverty incidence used the income data from the Family Income and Expenditure Survey (FIES) conducted in 2015.
  
Across provinces, Albay had the lowest incidence with 17.6 percent poor families in 2015. It likewise posted the biggest improvement in poverty situation at 16.3 percentage points from the 33.9 percent in 2012. Masbate and Camarines Sur also recorded decreases in poverty incidence with 5.1 and 4.6 percentage points respectively. However, inspite of the drop in poor families in Masbate, it has the highest recorded incidence at 35.5 percent.
 
On the other hand, poverty situation worsened in three Bicol provinces between the two periods. Camarines Norte had the biggest increase in incidence at 7.6 percentage points while Catanduanes rose by 6.5 percentage points and Sorsogon slightly up by 0.4 percentage point.
 
In terms of poverty incidence among population in 2015, Albay had the lowest incidence of 25.2 percent followed by Camarines Sur with 35.2 percent. On the other hand, Masbate had the highest incidence with 45.4 percent. The biggest improvement was recorded in Albay with 15.8 percentage points reduction.

The region's per capita poverty threshold in 2015 was placed at P21,476 higher than the P18,257 in 2012. Thus, this means that a Bicolano family with five members would need at least P8,948 average monthly to meet both basic food and non-food needs. 
 
Among provinces, Camarines Sur recorded the highest cost of living with P22,154 annual per capita poverty threshold while Masbate had the lowest with P20,406 in 2015. All provinces experienced more than 16 percent increases in poverty threshold, with Camarines Norte posting the highest at 20.2 percent between 2012 and 2015.
