The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), in partnership with the Department of Health (DOH), is conducting the 2021 Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) from 03 November to 04 December 2021. This survey will be conducted to the low and middle income countries wherein Philippines was included.
The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), a component of Global Tobacco Surveillance System (GTSS), is a global standard for systematically monitoring adult tobacco use and tracking key tobacco control indicators. GATS is a nationally representative household survey of adults 15 years of age or older using a standard core questionnaire, sample design, and data collection and management procedures that were reviewed and approved by international experts.
GATS is intended to enhance the capacity of countries to design, implement and evaluate tobacco control interventions. It aims to produce national and urban-rural estimates of tobacco use, exposure to second- hand smoking and frequency of quit attempts and to measure the impact of various tobacco control and prevention initiatives at country level.
A total of six (6) barangays with ninety eight (98) households will be the sample of the said survey. The GATS interview are consists of two parts: the Household Questionnaire which is a household screening interview and the Individual Questionnaire, wherein one individual will be randomly selected to answer about the background characteristics; tobacco smoking; electronic cigarettes; heated tobacco products; smokeless tobacco; cessation; secondhand smoke; economics; media; and knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about tobacco.
Moreover, the PSA assures its respondents that all information collected from them shall be kept strictly confidential. Section 26 of Republic Act 10625 stipulates that individual data furnished by the respondent to statistical inquiries, surveys and censuses of the PSA shall be considered as privileged information and such shall be inadmissible as evidence in any proceeding. The PSA may release data gathered from surveys and censuses only in the form of summaries or statistical tables, in which no reference to an individual, corporation, association, partnership, institution or business enterprise shall appear.
