Acute myocardial infarction led cause of deaths
Table 1 shows leading cause of deaths in Bicol Region in 2021. Deaths due to Acute myocardial infarction was the highest contributor to the total deaths, making up 13.8% (6,951) of the total registered deaths. This was followed by Pneumonia (Organism unspecified), with 2,998 or 5.9%, and Stroke with 2,357 or 4.7%. New entrant to the leading cause of deaths in 2021 is COVID-19 (virus identified) with 2,132 or 4.2%. Chronic ischaemic heart disease registered 1,894 or 3.8%, Other cerebrovascular diseases with 1,754 deaths or 3.5%, Respiratory tuberculosis (not confirmed bacteriologically or histologically) with 1,597 or 3.2%, Type 2 diabetes mellitus with 1,577 or 3.1%, Intracerebral haemorrhage with 1,508 or 3.0%, and Hypertensive heart disease with 1,430 or 2.8% deaths, respectively
Acute myocardial infarction (121) is the leading cause of death for persons in the age group 75-79 years old with 939 deaths or 13.5%. Increasing trend was noted starting from age group under 15 until reaching the age group 75-79 years old. It gradually decreased as the age group progressed thereafter. A total of 6,951 deaths was attributed to acute myocardial infarction.
Pneumonia (organism unspecified) coded J18 in ICD-10 was the leading cause of death to octogenarians or persons in the age group 80-84 years old and 85-89 years old with 526 or 17.5% and 418 or 13.9% deaths in 2021, respectively. In addition, Pneumonia was also the leading cause of deaths to children under 1 year old with 106 or 3.5% registered deaths. (Figure 2).
In 2021, Stroke, not specified as haemorrhage or infarction (164) was the third leading cause of death in Bicol Region. Death due to stroke was noted significantly on age groups: 65-99 with 316 deaths or 13.4.0%, 70-74 with 397 or 16.8%, and 80-84 with 345 or 14.6%. No death due to this disease was recorded to age group under 15 years old.
Death due to COVID-19 ,Virus Identified (U071) was noted across age groups. The most number of deaths was registered in age group 70-74 years old with 271 or 12.7%. On the other hand, age group under 15 years old registered 15 or 0.7% and age group 95 and over recorded 14 or 0.7%. A total of 2,132 deaths was attributed to COVID-19 in Bicol Region. (Figure 4).
Chronic lschaemic Heart Disease (125) was the fifth leading cause of death in the region. The most number of registered deaths attributed to this disease was noted in age groups: 70-74 with 254 or 13.4%, 75-79 with 267 or 14.1%, 80-84 with 309 or 16.3%, and 85-89 with 229 or 12.1%, respectively.
Deaths due to other cerebrovascular diseases (167) was noted all across age groups. The most number of deaths was registered in age group 70-74 years old with 295 or 16.8%. On the other hand, age group under 15 years old registered 2 deaths or 0.1 % and age group 95 and over recorded 16 deaths or 0.9%. A total of 1,754 deaths was attributed to other cerebrovascular diseases in Bicol Region. (Figure 6)
Deaths due to respiratory tuberculosis, not confirmed bacteriologically or histologically (A 16) was noted relatively high across age groups. The most number of deaths was registered in age group 65-69 years old with 190 or 11.9%. On the other hand, age group under 15 years old registered 24 or 1.5% and age group 95 and over recorded 3 deaths or 0.2%.
Recorded deaths due to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (E11) was significantly noted in age groups: 60-64 with 237 or 15.0% and 65-69 with 249 deaths or 15.8%. Increasing deaths due to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus was also noted in younger age groups. Three (3) deaths due to this disease was recorded to age group under 15 years old in 2021. (Figure 8).
About 3.0% or 1,508 deaths of was attributed to lntracerebral Haemorrhage (161). Ages ranging from 50-79 had the most number of deaths caused by this disease.
Deaths related to hypertensive heart disease (111) registered 1,430 or 2.8%. Deaths attributed to this disease was registered starting from age group 30-34 with 6 deaths or 0.4% and increased as age group progressed. The most registered deaths are from the age group 75-79 and 80-84 both with 238 or 16.6%. Decreasing trend was noted starting the age group 85-89 years old. (Figure 10).
Among males, Acute myocardial infarction was the leading cause of death with 4,054 or 14.4%. Pneumonia, organism unspecified was the second leading cause of death with 1,449 or 5.1%, followed by Stroke, not specified as haemorrhage or infarction with 1,270 or 4.5%.
Similar to males, the top cause of death among females was Acute myocardial infarction. A total of 2,897 female deaths or 13.0% was attributed to this disease in 2021. This was followed by Pneumonia, organism unspe cified, with 1,549 or 7.0%, and Stroke with 1,087 or 4.9%. Malignant neoplasm of breast, which are commonly known as "breast cancer" which was included in the ten leading causes of death of females in 2020 now ranked 13" with 463 deaths or 2.1%.(Table 3).
DEFINITION OF TERMS AND CONCEPTS
Death refers to the permanent disappearance of all evidence of life at any time after live birth has taken place (postnatal cessation of vital function without capability of resuscitation).
Maternal Death is the death ot a woman wtile pregnant or within 42 days ot termination ot pregnancy, respect ive ot the duration and site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management but not from accidental or incidental causes.
Infant Death is the death of young children under the age of 1.
Crude Death Rate (CDR) refers to the number of deaths per 1,000 mid-year population.
