Births born to teenage mothers reached 3,089 in 2022

In 2022, a total of 3,089 births to teenage mothers was registered in Bicol Region. The number of registered live births increased to 15.6% in 2022 from 2,673 registered births in 2021.

Figure 1 shows the number of births born to teenage mothers in Bicol Region from 2015 to 2022. The most number of registered births was recorded in 2015 with 3,576. Noticeably, teenage pregnancy showed a consistent decline from 2015 to 2018. In 2019, registered births slightly increased, recording 3,275, but it resumed its decline in the subsequent years, reaching 2,673 in 2021. A total of 3,089 births to teenage mothers was registered in Bicol Region in 2022.

From 2015 to 2022, the number of teenage pregnancies in Albay showed some fluctuation with a general downward trend, followed by an increase towards the end of the period. The most number of recorded births was recorded in 2015 with 671 while the least was in 2021 with 503 births. A total of 576 births to teenage mothers was registered in Albay in 2022.

Figure 3 shows the number of births to teenage mothers in Camarines Norte. The data shows a general decline in registered births and indicates that while there is an overall downward trend, the numbers do not decrease consistently every year. The most number of registered births was recorded in 2017 with 625 while the least was in 2021 with 456. A total of 498 births to teenage mothers was registered in Camarines Norte in 2022.

Figure 4 shows the number of births to teenage mothers in Camarines Sur. The number of registered teenage births peaked in 2015 with 1,152 and a general decline up to 2021 with 848 registered births. A slight growth in 2022 was noted with 991 registered births.

Figure 5 shows the number of births to teenage mothers in Catanduanes. From 2015 to 2016, the number of births increased from 198 to 224, showing a 13.1% rise. After the increase in 2016, the number of births generally declined from 224 in 2016 to 142 in 2021, representing a 36.6% decrease over this period. A total of 158 births to teenage mothers was registered in Catanduanes in 2022.

From 2015 to 2018, the number of births in Masbate decreased from 516 to 402, a reduction of 114 births (22.1%) suggesting a significant downward trend. From 2018 to 2020, the number of registered births stabilized with a slight decline from 402 to 399. The number of births dropped to 353 in 2021 (an 11.5% decrease from 399 in 2020). A total of 456 births to teenage mothers was registered in Masbate in 2022 (an increase of 23.5% from 2021).

Figure 7 shows the number of births to teenage mothers in Sorsogon. From 2015 to 2017, the number of births showed a slight decrease and peaked at 447 in 2017, the highest recorded registered births for the presented periods. A decline from 2017 to 2021 was noticed with 447 to 371 births, suggesting a 17.0% reduction. A total of 430 births to teenage mothers was registered in Sorsogon in 2022 (an increase of 15.9% from 2021).

DEFINITION OF TERMS AND CONCEPTS

Live Birth is a complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of conception, irrespective of the duration of the pregnancy, which after such separation, breathes or shows any other evidence of life, such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or definite movement of voluntary muscles, whether or not the umbilical cord has been cut or the placenta is attached; each product of such a birth is considered liveborn.
