Acute myocardial infarction led cause of deaths

 

 

In Bicol Region, the top cause of death among females was Acute myocardial infarction. A total of 2,273 female deaths or 12.5% was attributed to this disease. This was followed by Pneumonia, organism unspecified, with 1,223 or 6.7%, and Stroke, not specified as haemorrhage or infarction with 813 or 4.5%. Malignant neoplasm of breast, which are commonly known as “breast cancer” was documented to have caused 474 deaths or 2.6%. A total of 18,126 female deaths was recorded in Bicol Region in 2022.  

 

 

Acute myocardial infarction (I21) was one of the leading causes of death for females in the age groups 75-99 years old with 350 or 15.4%. Increasing trend was noted from age group under 15 until reaching the age group 75-89 years old. It gradually decreased as the age group progressed thereafter. A total of 2,273 female deaths was attributed to acute myocardial infarction.  

 

 

Pneumonia (organism unspecified) coded J18 in ICD-10 was one of the leading causes of death of females in the age group 80-84 years old with 226 or 18.5%, 85-89 with 200 or 16.4%, and 90-94 years old with 136 or 11.1% deaths in 2022 with 1,223. In addition, Pneumonia was also the leading cause of deaths to female children under 1 year old with 59 or 4.8%, and to age group 1-4 with 61 or 5.0% registered deaths.

 

 

Female deaths due to Stroke, not specified as haemorrhage or infarction (I64) was significantly noted on age groups, 70-74 with 142 or 17.5%, 80-84 with 137 or 16.9%, and 75-79 with 161 or 19.8% recording the most number of deaths in 2022. A total of 13 deaths related to this disease was noted to younger age groups ranging from of 15 to 39 years old. 

 

 

Recorded deaths due to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (E11) was significantly noted in age group 65-69 with 120 or 16.6%. Increasing deaths due to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus was also noted in younger age groups. One (1) death due to this disease was recorded to age group under 15 years old. A total of 17 deaths was recorded to age groups ranging from 25-39 years old in 2022. 

 

 

Other Cerebrovascular Diseases (I67) was the fifth leading cause of female deaths in Bicol Region. The most number of registered deaths attributed to this disease was noted in age group 80-84 with 119 or 17.1%. Age groups, 70-74 and 75-79 also recorded significant number of deaths caused by this disease with 103 and 106 deaths, respectively.

 

 

Chronic ischaemic heart disease (I25) was the sixth leading cause of female deaths in Bicol Region. The most number of registered deaths attributed to this disease was noted in age group 80-84 with 122 or 17.7% deaths. Chronic ischaemic heart disease was also noted to younger age groups: 20-24 with 7 or 1.0 % deaths, 25-29 with 4 or 0.6% deaths and 30-24 with 3 or 0.4% deaths, respectively.

 

 

About 3.0% or 540 female deaths was attributed to Intracerebral Haemorrhage (I61). Ages ranging from 55-79 years old had significant number of deaths caused by this disease. Age group 70-74 had the most recorded deaths due to Intracerebral Haemorrhage with 71 or 13.1%.

 

Malignant neoplasm of the breast (C50), commonly known as breast cancer, was the eight leading cause of deaths among females in 2022 recording about 2.6% or 474 deaths. Ages ranging from 40-69 years old had significant number of deaths caused by this disease. Age group 50-54 had the most recorded deaths with 68 or 14.3%. Age group 20-24 recorded 2 deaths and 1 death in age group 95 years old and over.
 

 

Death due to Respiratory tuberculosis, not confirmed bacteriologically or histologically was noted across all age groups in Bicol Region. The most number of deaths was registered in age group 65-69 years old with 64 or 14.0%. On the other hand, age group under 15 years old registered 11 or 2.4% and age group 95 and over recorded 2 or 0.4% deaths. In 2022, a total of 458 deaths was attributed to this disease in Bicol Region.

 

 

Female deaths due hypertensive heart disease was significantly noted on age group 75-79 years old with 99 deaths or 21.7%. A total of 16 deaths (3.5%) among females related to hypertensive heart disease was noted to younger age groups ranging from 25-44 years old. Age group 95 years old and over registered 6 or 1.3% deaths in 2022. 

 

DEFINITION OF TERMS AND CONCEPTS

Death refers to the permanent disappearance of all evidence of life at any time after live birth has taken place (postnatal cessation of vital function without capability of resuscitation).

Maternal Death is the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management but not from accidental or incidental causes.  

Infant Death is the death of young children under the age of 1
