Over half of the babies were born to unmarried mothers

More than half or 65.12 percent of registered live births (8,825 babies) in 2023 were born to unmarried parents. Adolescent mothers, particularly those under 15 years old, recorded the highest proportion of non-marital births, with 100% of their total births classified as non-marital. This was followed by aged 15-19 years at 97% and mothers aged 20-24 years at 84%. On the other hand, the lowest proportion of non-marital births 14% were among mothers aged 45-49 years old. (Figure 5)

Marriages involving adolescent females were three times as much as those involving adolescent males

In 2023, a total of 2,969 marriages were registered. There were 70 females who were adolescent comprising 2.4 percent of the total females who got married in 2023. This is three times higher than the number of marriages involving adolescent males. Registered marriages between adolescent males and females below 20 years old accounted for 152 or 1.5% of the total marriages in the province. (Figure 6)

Meanwhile, among the married females, there were more females married below 30 years old or 62% share. While there were more married men 30 and above years old or 51% share. (Figure 6 and Table 2)

More women died at older age than men

Figure 7 shows the age-sex structure of registered deaths in 2023. It shows an inverted pyramid, with fewer deaths at younger ages, except for children under 1, and progressively increasing as people grow old. In the province of Sorsogon, there were 6,204 registered deaths of which 3,553 deaths or 57.3% of the total deaths are male while the remaining 2,651 deaths or 42.7% were females.

The proportion of males who died was largest at the age groups 65 to 69 years old with 11.1% share. While for females, the largest was at the oldest age group, 85 years old and over (708 or 12.6% of female deaths). (Figure 7 and Table 3)

The sex ratio of 134 indicates that there were about 134 male deaths for every 100 female deaths. Moreover, a sex ratio of over a hundred means that more male deaths were registered compared to the female counterparts at each group before 80 years old except for age group 1 to 4 years old.
